I pull up the collar of my jacket as the fresh morning airstream passes the open car windows and hold onto my camera equipment to avoid it rattling on the bumpy road.
We drive up Roan Hill and astonished when looking down from above. Thousands of wildebeest migrated overnight and fill the vast plains under our feet. The monotonous wildebeest – moo seduces my ears, flies are everywhere, I have not enough hands to shake them off my nostrils, ears and eyes. We drive on.
After almost two hours drive we enter my favorite area in the north east of the Masai Mara; big red shimmering rocks and scurrile looking trees forming a magical landscape. The animals, as much as they like to spend time in this terrain, are difficult to spot here.
We stop and go, always watching out for any movement … nothing. Then, we pass a big rock; we reverse. There are three cheetahs lying down, sleeping or warming themselves on the stony surface, they look up.
I think to myself what a beautiful setting! But the cheetahs are restless – standing, walking, lying down, I am not seeing a nice composition happening.
Wind comes up; only a few fat raindrops fall. Evaporating scent rises up immediately as the drops fall onto the warm stones.
As the three cheetahs calm down a bit, I pressed the shutter a couple of times and this most beautiful image emerged.
