My Travels in Zimbabwe and Zambia – Klaus Tiedge Fine Art Photography on the go

Intrepidity

In March, I left Cape Town airport on a journey to Zimbabwe and Zambia with Opulent Living co-owner and co-founder, Barbara Lenhard. On landing at Victoria Falls Airport, we hopped onto a light aircraft operated by Wilderness Safaris that flew us to Linkwasha Camp. It’s always an enjoyable adventure for me to fly in a light aircraft!

Linkwasha Camp, Zimbabwe

This camp, set in beautiful surroundings in the middle of a vast plain, overlooking a waterhole, is Zimbabwe’s top wildlife destination and conservation area in Hwange.

Their en-suite tents are spacious and homely. However, the most unique experience for me was sleeping under the stars, out in the open. We spent the night on a raised platform with only a mosquito net between us and … the lions lurking around our sleeping place in the early hours! All they left behind were their footprints.

Our days were filled with game drives through the breath-taking countryside, and a visit to a local village school. We were truly welcomed at this institution, which is supported by Wilderness Safaris. The friendliness and warmth of the staff and learners overwhelmed me. The children put on a song and dance for us, and were beyond delighted to watch themselves in action on Barbara’s cell phone when they were done!

Toka Leya, Zambia

After spending three nights at Linkwasha, we returned to Victoria Falls Airport and were transferred by Wilderness Touring Zimbabwe to the Zambian camp, Toka Leya. Nestled on the bank of the great Zambezi River, Toka Leya is a safari-style sanctuary of peace and tranquillity – the perfect spot to unwind – and only 12 kilometres from the iconic Victoria Falls.

On visiting the Victoria Falls, we got to see them in their full splendour, as there had been a lot of rain. This also meant a lot of spray which wet us to our skin! The beauty and fascination of the place super ceded any discomfort we may have felt, however.

As you can tell from the pic, it can be challenging to photograph such wonders and do them justice.

What a wonderful adventure we had, and it gave me the opportunity to learn even more about this beautiful continent.

Image Story – Intrepidity

We spotted this lion in a tree in the Masai Mara watching over the plains. A behaviour that I have noticed with many big cats on my recent trip to Kenya which had to do with the enormously unusual high grass. So, yes even lions climbed the trees this year!

Although still fairly young he is an extremely strong and fearless lion and as a result of already some fought battles he is missing his left ear (which you cannot see in the picture now).

Soon after we had approached him, he jumped off the tree. While walking out into the plains he stopped several times roaring loudly for his fellowers.
